All ages are welcome to discover the fascinating lives of Maine owls on this annual evening nature walk!
When: Thursday, february 12th at 4:30pm.
Where: Lily Pond Community Forest
(NOTE: Location change from Merrymeeting Fields due to road conditions)
Join us as we welcome folks of all ages to search for one of our favorite winged-creatures! Participants will listen to different owl calls, explore what makes a good owl home, and learn fun facts about these nighttime birds of prey.
Registration is capped at 12 people to maintain a good group experience.
Maine is home to eleven owl species, who spend all or part of the year in the state. These nocturnal predators can live in a variety of habitats from dense woodlands, to marshes, to urban environments like golf courses or airports. KELT staff will share recordings of various owl calls as they lead prowlers on a walk through the preserve. Meeting at dusk will optimize chances of seeing or hearing owls as wintertime is their mating season. Owls will be listening for possible mates and more eager to respond to calls, even if they come from a recording.
Prowlers should wear footwear with excellent tread and/or bring microspikes for traction on potentially icy trails. Packing a headlamp and dressing to spend 1 – 1 ½ hours outdoors are strongly encouraged. There will be plenty of silent and mindful moments as we listen for calls.
We ask that participants please leave pets at home for this walk. Thank you!
