Conservation Organizations offer series of birding walks in the Midcoast Region

One of the joys of spring is the return of birds of all shapes, sizes and colors. Who doesn’t love stepping outside to a chorus of birdsong or catching a glimpse of bright red or yellow in the trees? The new warmth of spring and the longer days draws birds to make their spring migration. The window of time before the leaves come out provides a perfect opportunity to get a good look at our spring migrants. To help you identify and learn more about our local birds, several conservation groups collaborate each spring to offer the Birding Extravaganza!

All events are free and open to all, but advance registration is required. Visit the website for each organization for more information.

Bobolinks Walk with Maeve McGowan

Saturday, June 18th, 10-11 a.m. at Red Rose Preserve in Bowdoinham. The rain date for this event will be Sunday, June 19th, 10-11AM.

Advance registration is required. Register via the form below!

Join Maeve McGowan for a guided Bobolink walk at Red Rose Preserve in Bowdoinham on June 18th from 10-11AM. This will be an easy walk for birders of all abilities and ages to observe a charismatic bird during its breeding season. We will watch and listen for Bobolinks, other grassland birds, and potentially find some active nests along the way!

Maeve McGowan has been studying and passionately helping to advance the protection of grassland birds for four years. In 2018, she served as a research technician on the Bobolink Odyssey project, monitoring breeding behavior of Bobolinks and Savannah sparrows in Shelburne, Vermont. Her independent research explored the impact of climate change on grassland birds, dairy farmers, and the complex dynamic between them. In 2021 her paper “Agriculture is adapting to phenological shifts caused by climate change, but grassland songbirds are not” was published by the Journal of Ecology and Evolution.

Before her current position in nonprofit fundraising, Maeve worked with the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) for 7 years, building an intimate understanding of Maine’s conservation landscape. Now as a private contractor for KELT and program staff for Ag Allies, Maeve works with land trusts, municipalities, and other private landowners to manage their land in a sustainable and bird-friendly way.

Organized by Kennebec Estuary Land Trust.
