Written by the late Peter Vickery in cooperation with a distinguished team of co-authors and editors, the recently published Birds of Maine is the first comprehensive overview of Maine’s rich birdlife in 70 years.
We will provide a sampling of what the book includes with a special focus on birds of the Kennebec Estuary, including Merrymeeting Bay, and Seawall and Popham Beaches. We will also highlight conservation concerns for birds of our state.
Barbara Vickery, Peter’s wife and life partner, was co-managing editor of Birds of Maine. She was a conservation biologist for The Nature Conservancy in Maine for 33 years, most recently as Conservation Programs Director.
Jeff Wells was a member of the co-author team for Birds of Maine. Peter was one of Jeff’s earliest mentors and got him started in his professional career in ornithology and bird conservation. Jeff is now the Vice-president for Boreal Conservation for the National Audubon Society.
