Geocaching Workshop

Green Point Preserve, West Bath

July 24, 2010

Don’t be a “muggle” (a non-geocacher)! Come learn "the sport where you are the search engine” with the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) on Saturday, July 24 from 10:00am - noon at KELT’s Green Point Preserve, Birch Point Road, West Bath.

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. Participants locate hidden containers and then share their experiences online.

Joan Janowski, a KELT volunteer, has established caches all over Midcoast Maine including the new KELT Challenge, a total of 15 caches covering all 7 of KELT’s preserves. She just returned from a geocaching vacation out West, finding 180 caches in 2 weeks! This fall she goes to Russia and across Europe to hunt for more.

Joan, known as “Circles” to the geocaching community, will discuss how to get started in this family friendly sport, discuss terms and show samples of different types of caches.

Participants will then try two temporary caches before looking for a permanent cache on KELT’s preserve which has lovely views down Winnegance Bay.

The program assumes a basic working knowledge of GPS. Bring your equipment, fresh batteries and a picnic to enjoy after the hunt. To register for this free event please email info@kennebecestuary.org or call 442-8400.
